Miracle On 34th Street

Miracle On 34th Street, Adapted by Mountain Community Theater from the novel by Valentine Davies. Based upon the Twentieth Century Fox motion picture Miracle on 34th Street.

Directed by Michael Lain

This is a tale that we want to believe in, that creates a world we seem to desperately desire, free of the blatant commercialism that surrounds us, where love and decency and generosity of spirit are their own rewards. What we want Christmas to be all about, really." So writes the Santa Cruz Sentinel of this most heartwarming holiday story. By chance, Kris Kringle, an old man in a retirement home, gets a job working as Santa for Macy's. Kris unleashes waves of good will with Macy's customers and the commercial world of New York City by referring parents to other stores to find exactly the toy their child has asked for. Seen as deluded and dangerous by Macy's vocational counselor, who plots to have Kris shanghaied to Bellevue Psychiatric Hospital, Kris ends up in a court competency hearing. Especially at stake is one little girl's belief in Santa. In a dramatic decision, the court confirms Kris as the true Santa, allowing Susan and countless other children to experience the joy of childhood fantasy.

Carnegie’s final show of the 2023 season is a wonderful ode to the holiday season filled with joy and more than a little magic.

Playing: Dec. 1–10

Performances: Friday, Saturday @7:30PM & Saturday, Sunday @2:30 PM

Steel Magnolias

Steel Magnolias, By Robert Harling

Directed by Jason Calahan

The action is set in Truvy’s beauty salon in Chinquapin, Louisiana, where all the ladies who are “anybody” come to have their hair done. Helped by her eager new assistant, Annelle (who is not sure whether or not she is still married), the outspoken, wise-cracking Truvy dispenses shampoos and free advice to the town’s rich curmudgeon, Ouiser, ("I’m not crazy, I’ve just been in a bad mood for forty years"); an eccentric millionaire, Miss Clairee, who has a raging sweet tooth; and the local social leader, M’Lynn, whose daughter, Shelby (the prettiest girl in town), is about to marry a “good ole boy.” Filled with hilarious repartee and not a few acerbic but humorously revealing verbal collisions, the play moves toward tragedy when, in the second act, the spunky Shelby (who is a diabetic) risks pregnancy and forfeits her life. The sudden realization of their mortality affects the others, but also draws on the underlying strength—and love—which give the play, and its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and bad.

This theatre classic has brought so much joy and delighted Carnegie audiences during several past productions on our stage. GCCP is proud to go back to Truvy’s beauty salon and bask in the beauty of this beautiful and hilarious show.

Playing: Sep. 8–17

Performances: Friday, Saturday @7:30PM & Saturday, Sunday @2:30PM

Oliver!

Oliver! By Lionel Bart

Directed by Rachal Watson & Mindy Wilborn, Music Direction by Garrett Watson

Consider yourself at home with Lionel Bart's classic musical based on the Charles Dickens novel, Oliver Twist. The Tony and Olivier Award-winning show is one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members alike.

The streets of Victorian England come to life as Oliver, a malnourished orphan in a workhouse, becomes the neglected apprentice of an undertaker. Oliver escapes to London and finds acceptance amongst a group of petty thieves and pickpockets led by the elderly Fagin. When Oliver is captured for a theft that he did not commit, the benevolent victim, Mr. Brownlow takes him in. Fearing the safety of his hideout, Fagin employs the sinister Bill Sikes and the sympathetic Nancy to kidnap him back, threatening Oliver’s chances of discovering the true love of a family.

Oliver! is a musical theatre masterpiece, perfectly showcasing the talents of a large ensemble cast as they bring these classic characters and score to life.

Carnegie is so excited to once again bring a musical production to our stage. Be sure to join us for this delightful musical adventure!

Playing Jun. 9–18

The Odd Couple (Female Version)

The Odd Couple (Female Version), By Neil Simon

Directed by Tim Herndon

Unger and Madison are at it again! Florence Unger and Olive Madison, that is, in Neil Simon's hilarious contemporary comic classic: the female version of The Odd Couple. Instead of the poker party that begins the original version, Ms. Madison has invited the girls over for an evening of Trivial Pursuit. The Pidgeon sisters have been replaced by the two Constanzuela brothers. But the hilarity remains the same. The female version of The Odd Couple was first presented on Broadway by Emanuel Azenberg, Wayne M. Rogers, and The Shubert Organization at the Broadhurst Theatre on June 11, 1985. It was directed by Gene Saks.

Join us for our Spring 2023 production of The Odd Couple! We will have hilarious hijinks and a whole lot of wonderful laughs.

Playing Mar. 24–Apr. 2, 2023

Farce Of Habit

Comic fireworks explode in FARCE OF HABIT, an absurdly funny Southern-fried romp that takes us back to the Reel 'Em Inn, the finest little fishing lodge in the Ozarks. The proprietor, D. Gene Wilburn, is looking forward to a peaceful weekend on the lake. But there are only two chances of that happening: slim and none. Add to this the presence of Jock McNair, a nationally known relationship guru whose colossal ego threatens everyone's sanity; a shy retiree anxious to cut loose and embrace his inner caveman and a couple of wild women who may or may not be who they claim to be. Throw in the storm of the century that's fast bearing down on Mayhew, Arkansas and D. Gene has no prayer of baiting a hook any time soon.

If you enjoy gloriously preposterous hilarity, then laughing your way through the take-no-prisoners lunacy of Farce Of Habit is one habit you'll never want to break!
